Care and Hanging of Your Navajo Weaving

Over the years, we’ve found that the best way to hang new Navajo rugs is to use a special Velcro which we have included with your Navajo weavings.

This Velcro is like a band-aid in that it has an adhesive strip on one side. Simply have a board (1” x 2” or even something as narrow as a yardstick) cut the width of the top edge of the weaving. The Velcro is then adhered to the board.

We recommend, in addition to the adhesive on the back of the Velcro, that you apply a few staples on the ends and top edge of the board. This will help prevent the Velcro from coming loose over the years. The board then can be adhered to the wall with nails, or with the zig-zag hangers, which are also included with your purchase. The weaving can then be pressed against the Velcro and the nap of the weaving acts as the fuzzy part of the Velcro.

This should hold the piece with no problem. If the bottom edges of the weaving do no hang flat, you can cut a small 1” square of the Velcro and adhere it directly to the wall and stick the corners of the rug to it.

When you remove the Velcro from the wall BE CERTAIN TO HEAT IT FIRST WITH A BLOW DRYER OR IT WILL TAKE YOUR WALLPAPER OR PAINT WITH IT!

Older weavings that are worn smooth with no “fuzz” left on the weaving cannot be hung in the same way unless a strip of fuzzy Velcro is sewn to the weaving and then attached to the hook side of the Velcro that is mounted on the wall. Before you do this, try brushing the edge of the weaving you want to hang it from with a stiff brush. It is likely you will create enough “fuzz” to hang the weaving.

Other options are to use push pins, being certain to place them no more than 1/2” apart to properly support the weaving.

If moths are a problem in your area, you can spray the wall behind the weavings with a moth protector. The pieces should also be removed from the wall and reversed every six months. With the Velcro, this is a one-minute deal.

If the weavings are placed on the floor, put a good carpet pad under the pieces. If the weavings are placed on top of carpet, it’s a good idea to stop by an Oriental rug store and pick up a non-slip pad. This will keep your weaving from bunching up and slipping.

The weavings should be vacuumed with a suction attachment, never with a brush attachment. Spills should be blotted immediately. Wine, coffee, or other spills can be picked up by pouring salt on the spill. Water can be used sparingly and immediately blotted.

If the weaving is stained, please send it to us for cleaning. We work with several cleaners who are experts at different types of problems.

Should your weaving be damaged, it can generally be repaired. The only exception would be fading due to extended periods of exposure to direct light or very bright indirect light. This is a very important reason to turn the weavings on a regular basis.

Tears, worn corners and edges and holes can usually be repaired.
